Commercial Pilot License (CPL)

Program Summary

Privileges and Limitations

As an instrument rated pilot, you may:
 

  • Act as pilot in command (PIC) of an aircraft for which you are rated under instrument flight rules (IFR) or visual flight rules (VFR).

  • Fly day or night in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC; generally, less than one statue mile visibility, and/or in clouds).

  • Fly for pleasure, personal travel, or business travel.

  • Carry passengers and share the flight expenses equally.

You may not:
 

  • Fly under IFR if the aircraft is not properly equipped for IFR.

  • Fly under IFR if you have not completed all FAA recurrent training requirements.

FAA Training Requirements

  • Possess a Private or Commercial Pilot certificate

  • 40 hours of instrument flight time, including:

    15 hours of training with an authorized instructor (CFII)

  • Up to 10 hours of instrument training may be logged using our Elite Basic Aviation Training Device (BATD)
     

  •  3 hours of training in preparation for the FAA Instrument Rating – Airplane Practical Test

  • Pass the FAA Instrument Rating – Airplane Airman Knowledge Test

  • Pass the FAA Instrument Rating – Airplane Practical Test (includes a knowledge and skills evaluation)

Getting Started Checklist

Contact us to schedule your orientation, which will include a detailed audit of your pilot logbook. All orientations are conducted and billed as regular ground instruction. During the orientation your instructor will:
 

  • Collect your proof of U.S. Citizenship (see below)

  • Review all Holladay Aviation policies and procedures.

  • Schedule your first lesson.

Gather proof of U.S. citizenship: unexpired U.S. Passport, or a U.S. birth certificate. We’ll also need a copy of your driver’s license. We are no longer accepting foreign students.
